We were pleased to welcome Farimah, a highly qualified artist, and on this occasion, a highly accomplished pastellist.Farimah chose to do a portrait of John Lennon, and used a full sheet of terracotta Colorfix pastel paper, and a selection of pastels – including Unison.
Working from dark to light, Farimah indicated the darkest areas, the hair, the left side of the face and the eye area. She introduced many gorgeous colours as she expertly developed the painting, blues for the shadow areas, some warmer colours, a very pale yellow and for the lightest of all, a pale blue.
Part of the way through Mary asked if she was going to do the glasses (John Lennon without his glasses!!).Of course, replied Farimah, but not yet, wait till the end! When the time came the glasses went in expertly, pale yellow for the light parts, and a smudge of blue for the highlights on the lenses. After Farimah had finished and we had a chance to examine the portrait closely, we could see the glorious colours that she had used to create the effect.A lesson for us all!
Thank you Farimah for your demonstration, it was much appreciated by everyone present.
